Palau, officially known as the Republic of Palau, is an island country located in the western Pacific Ocean. It is part of the larger island group of Micronesia. The country consists of around 340 islands, with the most populous being Koror. Palau is known for its stunning coral reefs, pristine beaches, and diverse marine life, making it a popular destination for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Palau gained independence from the United States in 1994 and is a unitary presidential republic. The capital city is Ngerulmud, located on the island of Babeldaob. The economy is primarily based on tourism, fishing, and agriculture, with tourism being the most significant contributor.

The country has a population of around 21,000 people and is known for its strong emphasis on environmental conservation. Palau was one of the first countries to create a marine sanctuary, banning commercial fishing in a significant portion of its waters to protect the marine ecosystem.

Palau is a member of the United Nations, the Pacific Islands Forum, and the Pacific Community. The country's official languages are Palauan and English, with Palauan being the most widely spoken.
