Holy See (the)

The Holy See (Latin: Sancta Sedes), also known as the Papal States or simply Vatican City, is a sovereign city-state enclaved within Rome, Italy. It is the spiritual and administrative headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church and the residence of the Pope. The Holy See is recognized as a separate entity from the Vatican City State, which came into existence in 1929 following the Lateran Treaty.

The Holy See operates through various departments, including the Roman Curia, which assists the Pope in governing the Church. It is also a permanent observer in the United Nations and maintains diplomatic relations with numerous countries around the world. The Pope, as the Bishop of Rome and leader of the global Catholic Church, holds significant influence in international affairs and is regarded as a moral authority for millions of believers.

With a rich history dating back to the early Christian Church, the Holy See plays a central role in the ecclesiastical life of Catholicism and serves as a symbol of religious continuity and tradition. Its iconic landmarks, such as St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums, attract millions of visitors each year, making it a prominent pilgrimage site and cultural destination.
