Its capital and largest city is Tegucigalpa.
Honduras is known for its rich history, diverse culture, and stunning natural landscapes, including mountains, rainforests, and Caribbean beaches. The country has a population of over 9 million people and is a mix of indigenous, European, African, and Asian heritage.
Honduras gained independence from Spain in 1821 and has since faced political instability, natural disasters, and social challenges. Its economy is primarily based on agriculture, with coffee, bananas, and palm oil being major exports.
Tourism is also a significant industry in Honduras, with attractions such as the ancient Mayan ruins of Copan, the Bay Islands with their coral reefs, and the Celaque National Park with its highest peak, Cerro Las Minas. However, the country also struggles with poverty, crime, and corruption.
Honduras has a presidential representative democratic republic form of government, with a president serving as both head of state and head of government. The official language is Spanish, and the majority religion is Christianity.
