Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea. It is an archipelago that includes the main island of Puerto Rico and a number of smaller islands, with a total area of approximately 3,500 square miles. The capital and largest city is San Juan.
Originally inhabited by the Taíno people, Puerto Rico was colonized by Spain in the 15th century. It became a territory of the United States in 1898 as a result of the Spanish-American War. Puerto Ricans are US citizens, but the territory does not have full representation in the US Congress and its residents do not pay federal income tax.
Puerto Rico is known for its beautiful beaches, tropical climate, and vibrant culture. Spanish and English are the official languages, with Spanish being the most widely spoken. The economy is based primarily on manufacturing, tourism, and services.
The territory has a rich cultural heritage that blends Spanish, African, Taíno, and American influences. Traditional music genres such as salsa, reggaeton, and bomba are popular, and the cuisine features a mix of Spanish, African, and indigenous flavors.
Puerto Rico has faced economic challenges in recent years, including a debt crisis and the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria in 2017. The territory continues to recover and rebuild, with efforts focused on sustainable development and strengthening resilience to natural disasters.
