Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory located in the Caribbean. The island is known as the "Emerald Isle of the Caribbean" due to its resemblance to coastal Ireland. With a population of around 5,000 people, Montserrat is home to the Soufrière Hills volcano, which has been intermittently active since the 1990s, leading to widespread devastation of the southern part of the island. The capital and largest town of Montserrat is Plymouth, though much of it has been abandoned due to volcanic activity. The economy is heavily dependent on tourism and remittances from Montserratians living abroad. The official language is English, and the currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar.
