Cocos (Keeling) Islands (the)

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands is a territory of Australia located in the Indian Ocean. Comprising of 27 small islands, only two of which are inhabited. The territory's total land area is a mere 14 square kilometres, with a population of around 600 people. The islands are known for their stunning natural beauty, with white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters ideal for diving and snorkelling.

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands were originally settled by the Clunies-Ross family in the 19th century for copra production. In 1955, the islands were transferred to Australian governance, eventually becoming an external territory of Australia. The islands are now home to a multicultural community, with a blend of Malay, European, and Australian influences.

Tourism is a major industry for the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, with visitors attracted to the pristine beaches, abundant marine life, and unique culture. The territory also plays a strategic role for Australia, hosting a small airstrip used for military and commercial purposes.
