European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde recently advocated for the implementation of a central bank digital currency (CBDC), emphasizing its potential to act as a unifying force within the European Union. Lagarde highlighted the importance of a digital euro in facilitating cross-border transactions and ensuring financial sovereignty for the region.
The introduction of a CBDC could address various challenges faced by the traditional financial system, such as fostering financial inclusion, enhancing payment efficiency, and promoting innovation in the digital economy. Lagarde stated that the digital euro project is currently under review, with a decision expected to be made in the coming months.
